PLAYING FOR A CAUSE - AHS Playing for Colleen Martin
The top-ranked Avon High School boys and girls soccer teams are playing for a cause this week.  In honor of Avon Middle School physical education teacher, Colleen Martin, who passed away last week after a brief illness, the teams will each play ‘under the lights’ on the high school football field to raise funds for cancer research.  “Colleen taught 7th and 8th grade P.E., so she touched virtually all of our student-athletes in some way,” explains AHS Athletic Director, Newell Porch.  “The kids are pretty shook up about her passing.  They came up with the fundraising idea as a way to honor her.”

The boys’ team, which has made it to the Class L State Championship finals the past two years, and is currently 10-2, will play Ellington at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22nd.  The girls’ team, which has won the Class L State Championship the past two years, and is currently 11-1, will play Suffield at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25th.  Both teams will raffle off a game ball, autographed by the team and coaching staff, and sell a wide range of refreshments.  The games are expected to be competitive contests with the girls looking for payback against the one team to beat them this season.
